What is The State of Birds Report?

In an unprecedented partnership, government wildlife agencies and conservation groups including the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, U.S. Committee, American Bird Conservancy Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Klamath Bird Observatory, National Audubon Society, The Nature Conservancy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service U.S. Geological Survey,  have come together to produce this first comprehensive analysis of the state of our nation's birds.

Successful conservation requires information about the population status of every species to ensure the survival of endangered birds and to manage common species so they never become threatened. The State of Birds Report represents a new synthesis of major bird-monitoring databases, including data from thousands of citizen scientists and professional biologists. Data from three continentwide monitoring programs were used to create bird population indicators for major U.S. habitats, reflecting the health of these habitats and the environmental services they provide. In our area the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count was used.
